Then it shall be, on the day he causes his sons to inherit that which he has, that he may not make the son of the beloved the firstborn before the son of the hated, the firstborn.
English: “That which he has” — this teaches that an ordinary son takes a share in property that is only due (ra’uy) just as in property already in possession (muchzak).
On the daf / in context: An ordinary heir inherits even assets that the father was only entitled to receive later. The firstborn’s double portion, by contrast, is limited to assets already in the father’s possession at death (as the next verse will teach).
