And it shall be, if you do not desire her, then you shall send her away for herself; you shall not sell her for money; you shall not treat her as a slave, because you have afflicted her.

On the daf / in context: The language “ve-haya” is read as a prediction: the relationship that began as a concession to the yetzer hara will end in hatred. This foreshadows the next section (the hated wife and the rebellious son) and warns the soldier of the consequences of following that desire.
