And who is the man who has planted a vineyard and has not redeemed it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man redeem it.
Torah Temimah points to Sotah 43b.
TT lemma: וְלֹא חִלְּלוֹ.
English: ‘And has not redeemed it’ – that he has not yet eaten ordinary fruit from it.
Derash defining chillul (Bavli) — the exemption lasts until the owner has performed the redemption of the neta revai.
Until the planter has redeemed the fourth-year fruit of the vineyard, he is exempt from war.
