The Complete Passuk

וְשָֽׁלְחוּ֙ זִקְנֵ֣י עִיר֔וֹ וְלָקְח֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ מִשָּׁ֑ם וְנָתְנ֣וּ אֹת֗וֹ בְּיַד֙ גֹּאֵ֣ל הַדָּ֔ם וָמֵֽת׃

Then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there and give him into the hand of the blood-avenger, and he shall die.

Core Text

וְשָׁלְחוּ זִקְנֵי עִירוֹ – בֵּית דִּין שֶׁל עִירוֹ.

English: ‘The elders of his city shall send’ – the court of his city.

On the daf / in context: The local court is responsible for retrieving the intentional murderer from the city of refuge.

Derash on the role of the local court (Bavli) — the elders of the killer’s city act to extradite him.

When the killer is found to be intentional, the court of his city sends and takes him from the city of refuge and delivers him to the blood-avenger.
