Core Text

English: “On the altar of Hashem” — What does the verse come to teach? Rather, to teach that the flesh and the blood are on the altar of Hashem, but the slaughter is not on the altar of Hashem, only adjacent to it.

On the daf / in context: The verse distinguishes the location of the offering of flesh and blood from the location of the shechitah itself.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — the location of shechitah relative to the altar.

What Is Learned

The flesh and blood of the offering are placed on the altar, but the slaughter itself is performed adjacent to the altar, not upon it.
