Core Text

English: “In order that it may go well with you” — R’ Shimon son of Rebbi says: Go and learn: If with regard to blood, from which a person’s soul recoils, one who refrains from it receives reward, then with regard to robbery and forbidden relations, which a person’s soul desires, how much more so does one who refrains from them acquire merit for himself and for his generations and for the generations of his generations until the end of all generations.

On the daf / in context: The promise of well-being for refraining from blood becomes the basis for a kal va-chomer regarding more tempting prohibitions.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — the reward for refraining from prohibitions.

What Is Learned

If reward is given for refraining from blood (which is naturally repulsive), how much more so for refraining from robbery and forbidden relations (which are naturally attractive).
