Core Text

English: “And you shall not eat…” — Blood is juxtaposed to a limb from a living animal, to teach that just as a limb from a living animal is forbidden, so blood from a living animal is forbidden. And what is that? This is the blood of bloodletting with which the life departs.

On the daf / in context: The juxtaposition extends the prohibition to blood taken from a living animal when that blood is of the type with which life departs.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — the prohibition of blood from a living animal.

What Is Learned

Blood taken from a living animal (specifically the blood with which life would depart) is forbidden, just as a limb from a living animal is forbidden.
