If the place that Hashem your God will choose to put His Name there is too far from you, then you shall slaughter from your herd and from your flock that Hashem has given you, as I have commanded you, and you shall eat within your gates according to all the desire of your soul.
English: “If [the place] is too far…” — At a distant place you may slaughter and eat, but you may not slaughter and eat at a nearby place. This excludes ordinary animals from being slaughtered in the azarah; and if they were slaughtered there, they are forbidden.
On the daf / in context: The permission to slaughter ordinary meat is limited to places distant from the Sanctuary; slaughter of chullin inside the azarah is prohibited.
Type of Learning
Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — the prohibition of slaughtering ordinary animals in the azarah.
What Is Learned
Ordinary (chullin) animals may not be slaughtered in the azarah; if they are, the meat is forbidden.
