If the place that Hashem your God will choose to put His Name there is too far from you, then you shall slaughter from your herd and from your flock that Hashem has given you, as I have commanded you, and you shall eat within your gates according to all the desire of your soul.
English: “If [the place] is too far…” — It was taught: R’ Akiva says: The verse comes only to forbid them the meat of stabbing (nechirah). At first it was permitted to them, and from the time they entered the Land it was forbidden to them.
On the daf / in context: Before entry into the Land, animals could be killed by stabbing; the requirement of proper shechitah became binding only after entry.
