Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
מְבוֹא הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ – מָקוֹם שֶׁחַמָּה זוֹרַחַת.

English: “The going down of the sun” — the place from which the sun rises (i.e., a location distant from the eastern side of the Jordan).

On the daf / in context: There is a dispute in the sources whether “mevo ha-shemesh” points to the western or the more remote aspect of the location; the derash here takes it as indicating distance from the Jordan’s eastern bank.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — clarifying the directional force of “mevo ha-shemesh.”

What Is Learned

The site is located at a distance from the Jordan, on the side associated with the sun’s path.
