Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Bava Basra 115a

English: It was taught: A woman bequeaths to her children but does not inherit [from them], for Scripture says “and every daughter who inherits a possession” — she inherits, but she does not bequeath [in the sense of receiving from her children].

Type of Learning

Asymmetry: a mother transmits inheritance to children but does not inherit from them.

What Is Learned

The verse’s active “who inherits” is read to affirm that a daughter may inherit, while the absence of reciprocal language bars a mother from inheriting her children’s estate.
