Core Text — Bava Basra 111a

English: It was taught: From where [do we know] that a son precedes a daughter in the mother’s property? From “from the tribes” — it equates the mother’s tribe to the father’s tribe; just as in the father’s tribe a son precedes a daughter, so in the mother’s tribe a son precedes a daughter.

Type of Learning

Son precedes daughter in maternal inheritance, by analogy to paternal inheritance.

What Is Learned

The plural “tribes” links maternal and paternal lines so that the priority of son over daughter applies equally to property inherited from the mother.
