English: It was stated: one who weaves a garment for the dead — Rava said it is permitted. Why? Designation alone is nothing, derived from “sham” “sham” from idolatry: just as idolatry is not forbidden by mere designation, so here mere designation does not forbid.

Type of Learning

Gezeirah shavah of place-word “sham.”

What Is Learned

A shroud prepared in advance is not forbidden by that designation alone until used for the dead.
