Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: It was taught: “If you walk in My statutes” — one might think this refers to the mitzvos themselves. Scripture therefore says “and keep My commandments and do them” — the mitzvos are already stated. How then do I fulfill “If you walk in My statutes”? That you shall toil in Torah.

Type of Learning

Exclusion / residual derasha (mi’ut after a parallel clause) — the statutes clause is not mere observance but laborious Torah study.

What Is Learned

“Walking in statutes” is not simply keeping mitzvos (already covered by the next clause). It demands ameilus — sustained, effortful engagement with Torah, the toil that unlocks the statutes’ meaning.
