וְכִפֶּ֨ר הַכֹּהֵ֜ן אֲשֶׁר־יִמְשַׁ֣ח אֹת֗וֹ וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר יְמַלֵּא֙ אֶת־יָד֔וֹ לְכַהֵ֖ן תַּ֣חַת אָבִ֑יו וְלָבַ֛שׁ אֶת־בִּגְדֵ֥י הַבָּ֖ד בִּגְדֵ֥י הַקֹּֽדֶשׁ׃

לכהן תחת אביו — מלמד שהבן קודם לכל אדם; יכול אע"פ שאין ממלא מקומו של אביו? ת"ל ואשר ימלא את ידו — בזמן שהוא ממלא מקומו הוא קודם, ואם לאו יבא אחר וישמש תחתיו.
English: “To serve as Kohen in his father’s stead” — the son has priority, but only when he is fit to fill his father’s place; otherwise another is appointed.
