Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “To whom the house belongs” — it was taught: One might think that synagogues and study halls [that contain no dwelling] become tamei through negaim; therefore the verse says “to whom the house belongs” — one to whom it is uniquely his; these that are not uniquely his are excluded.

Type of Learning

Exclusion of non-residential communal buildings

What Is Learned

Chazal exclude pure synagogues and batei midrash that lack residential use from the laws of house-negaim.
