Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “To whom the house belongs” — it was taught: Negaim come because of stinginess, as it is written “and the one to whom the house belongs shall come,” and the school of R’ Yishmael taught: one who reserves his house for himself alone [and is unwilling to lend his vessels to others].

Type of Learning

Moral cause — tzaras ayin

What Is Learned

Chazal link house-negaim to the character flaw of stinginess (tzaras ayin); the owner who refuses to share is publicly exposed when the house must be emptied.
