וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה — עֲשֵׂה שֶׁיִּהְיוּ הַיּוֹם וְהַלַּיְלָה מְשׁוּמָּרִין. מִכָּאן סָמְכוּ חֲכָמִים לוֹמַר: אוֹר לְאַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר בּוֹדְקִין אֶת הֶחָמֵץ.

English: “And you shall guard this day” — make it so that the day and the night are guarded. From here the Sages supported saying: on the night of the fourteenth one searches for chametz.
