Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Pesachim 41a (via Torah Temimah)
צְלִי אֵשׁ — וְלֹא צְלִי קְדֵרָה.

English: “Roasted with fire” — and not pot-roasted [cooked in a pot without added water, only in its own juices, which is still a form of cooking].

Type of Learning

Exclusionary derash of אֵשׁ: heat without open fire (pot-roast) is invalid.

What Is Learned

The Pesach must be roasted by fire, not cooked in a pot in its own juices.
