Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Pesachim 85a

English: And it was taught: “And you shall not break a bone of it” — whether a bone that has marrow or a bone that has no marrow. And how do I fulfill “And they shall eat the meat on this night”? With the meat that is on the outside of the bone.

Type of Learning

Clarifying derash: the mitzvah of eating the meat refers to flesh on the bone, not marrow inside (which would require breaking).

What Is Learned

The obligation is to eat the meat on the outside of the bone; one does not break bones to reach marrow.
