Then Yosef commanded to fill their vessels with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way; and thus was it done unto them.
Classical midrash on the return of the money.
וּלְהָשִׁיב כַּסְפֵּיהֶם אִישׁ אֶל שַׂקּוֹ. הַכֶּסֶף הַחֹזֵר הוּא חֵלֶק מִן הַמִּבְחָן.
English of Core Text: “And to restore every man’s money into his sack.” The returned money is itself part of the test.
On the daf / in context: The midrash understands the secret restoration of the silver as a deliberate provocation that will force the brothers to confront both their fear and their integrity on the journey home.
