The Complete Passuk

He wields no more authority in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except yourself, since you are his wife. How then could I do this most wicked thing, and sin before God?”

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “And sin against God” — illicit relations is one of the matters for which one is punished in this world while the principal remains for the World to Come.

On the daf / in context: Yosef names the sin as against God, not only against the husband; the Bavli classifies arayos among sins with double collection.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. “Against God” marks a sin whose debt is not exhausted in this world.

What Is Learned

Giluy arayos is punished in this world and still leaves a debt for the World to Come.
