Source Citation

Classical sources beyond the TT-numbered main ring: Rashi on 31:44.

Lemma: והיה לעד.

Core Text of Chazal / Classical Meforshim

Core Text
וְהָיָה לְעֵד – הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא.

English: “And let it be a witness” — the Holy One, blessed be He.

On the daf / in context: Rashi understands the subject of “and it shall be a witness” as Hashem Himself, who will stand as the ultimate guarantor of the covenant between Yaakov and Lavan.

Type of Learning

Derash / classical peirush — not a formal named middah of the 13. The impersonal “and it shall be” is read as referring to the Divine Presence.

What Is Learned

The covenant is not merely between two men; Hashem Himself is invoked as the enduring witness.
