Core Text of Chazal / Classical Meforshim

Core Text
וַיִּקַּח יַעֲקֹב אֶבֶן וַיְרִימֶהָ מַצֵּבָה – הַמַּצֵּבָה עוֹמֶדֶת לְעֵד עַל הַבְּרִית.

English: Yaakov took a stone and raised it as a pillar — the pillar stands as a witness to the covenant.

On the daf / in context: The single stone that Yaakov erects becomes the formal matzevah of the treaty, later joined by the larger heap of stones gathered by both parties.

Type of Learning

Derash / classical peirush — not a formal named middah of the 13. The act of erecting the stone is the formal initiation of the covenant monument.

What Is Learned

Yaakov’s raising of the single stone establishes the matzevah that will serve, together with the subsequent heap, as the permanent physical witness of the agreement.
