Sefaria

Core Text of Chazal

English: Rabbi Levi said: The punishment for (dishonest) measures is more severe than the punishment for forbidden relations, for concerning those it is said “el” and concerning these it is said “elleh.”

On the daf / in context: The stronger form of the word for “these” is taken as an indication of greater severity.

Type of Learning

Derash comparing the severity of the two prohibitions.

What Is Learned

Dishonest weights and measures are treated with exceptional severity, even more than certain arayot.
