Sefaria — Sifrei Devarim / Makkot 22b

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
יַכֶּנּוּ – יַכֶּנּוּ וְלֹא עַל הַקַּרְקַע וְלֹא עַל הַכְּסוּת.

English: ‘He shall strike him’ – he shall strike him, and not the ground and not the clothing.

On the daf / in context: The verse is read to require that the blows land only on the person’s body, not on the floor or on garments that remain in place.

Type of Learning

Limiting derash on the object of the verb (Sifrei / Bavli).

What Is Learned

The lashes must strike the body itself. Clothing is removed (or torn open) so that the blows are not absorbed by fabric, and the person is positioned so that the strap does not hit the ground.
