Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
וְנִגְּשׁוּ אֶל הַמִּשְׁפָּט וּשְׁפָטוּם – בְּבֵית דִּין.

English: ‘And they come to judgment, and they judge them’ – in a court.

On the daf / in context: Judgment must be rendered by a qualified beit din.

Type of Learning

Derash requiring a court (Sifrei) — private settlement is not the setting for the lashes that follow.

What Is Learned

The parties must appear before a court; only a judicial decision sets the stage for the punishment discussed in the next verses.
