And they shall say to the elders of his city: This son of ours is wayward and rebellious; he does not listen to our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.
English: A wayward and rebellious son never was and never will be. Why then was it written? Expound it and receive reward.
On the daf / in context: Because of the many strict conditions (age window, parental parity, quantities, theft, warning, etc.), the Gemara records the view that the case never occurred and never will. The section is nevertheless studied for the reward of Torah study itself.
