Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
בֵּן – בֵּן וְלֹא בַּת, בֵּן וְלֹא אִישׁ.

English: “Son” — a son and not a daughter; a son and not a (mature) man.

On the daf / in context: Rabbi Shimon notes that logic might have included a daughter (because she is more easily drawn into sin), yet the verse explicitly limits the law to a son. A full adult is likewise excluded.

Type of Learning

Mi’ut from the word “ben.”

What Is Learned

Only a male youth is subject to the law of the wayward and rebellious son; a daughter and a mature man are excluded.
