Core Text

English: “The one beloved \ldots” — is there a beloved before the Omnipresent and a hated before the Omnipresent? Rather, “beloved” means beloved in her marriage (permitted), “hated” means hated in her marriage (forbidden by a negative commandment). And the Merciful One says “when they shall be,” teaching that kiddushin takes effect even with those forbidden by negative commandments.

On the daf / in context: The Gemara refuses a literal reading of divine favoritism. “Beloved / hated” refers to the legal status of the marriage itself. From “ki sihyeyna” the Sages learn that kiddushin is effective even in cases of lavin (negative commandments), though the relationship remains forbidden.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli) — reinterpreting “beloved / hated” as legal status of the marriage.

What Is Learned

Kiddushin takes effect even with a woman forbidden by a negative commandment; the terms “beloved” and “hated” refer to the permissibility of the marriage, not to personal favoritism.
