Core Text

English: “Two wives” — we require two wives from one people, to exclude one Israelite and one Egyptian (convert of restricted status).

On the daf / in context: The subsequent derasha establishes that kiddushin takes effect even with women forbidden by a negative commandment. The present limitation ensures the case is one of two wives of the same national status, so the inheritance rule can be applied cleanly.

Type of Learning

Mi’ut from the phrase “shetei nashim.”

What Is Learned

The inheritance rule of this section applies when both wives belong to the same people; it does not address a mixed case of an Israelite and a restricted convert.
