Only the women, the children, the livestock, and all that is in the city, all its spoil, you shall plunder for yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which the Eternal your God has given you.

Lemma: רַק הַנָּשִׁים וְהַטַּף וְהַבְּהֵמָה.
English: ‘Only the women, the children, the livestock’ – these are the permitted ones.
Derash limiting the killing (Sifrei) — the verse explicitly spares women, children, and animals for booty.
When a far-off city is taken after refusing peace, only the males are put to the sword; the women, children, and livestock are taken as spoil.
