Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
וְלֹא יִמַּס אֶת לְבַב אֶחָיו כִּלְבָבוֹ – שֶׁהַפַּחַד מִתְדַּבֵּק.

English: ‘So that he not melt the heart of his brothers as his own heart’ – for fear is contagious.

On the daf / in context: The reason is the protection of the morale of the whole army.

Type of Learning

Derash on the contagion of fear (Bavli) — one fearful man endangers the spirit of the unit.

What Is Learned

Fear spreads; therefore the Torah removes the fearful man so that he does not demoralize his comrades.
