TT #300 · Parashas Shoftim · Seventh Aliyah · Passuk 20:07
And who is the man who has betrothed a woman and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man take her.
Torah Temimah points to Sotah 44a.
TT lemma: פֶּן יָמוּת בַּמִּלְחָמָה וְאִישׁ אַחֵר יִקָּחֶנָּה.
English: ‘Lest he die in the battle and another man take her’ – a matter of distress.
Derash on the parallel motive (Bavli) — the three exemptions share the theme of unfinished personal beginnings.
The Torah protects a man from the anguish of dying in battle while his betrothal remains unconsummated and another takes his place.
