When you go out to war against your enemies and see horse and chariot, a people more numerous than you, you shall not fear them, for the Eternal your God is with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.

Source Citation

Chazal / classical source (beyond TT-numbered main-ring units): Sotah 42a / Rambam.

Sefaria — Sotah 42a / Rambam

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
וְרָאִיתָ סוּס וָרֶכֶב עַם רַב מִמְּךָ – אֲפִלּוּ כֵּן לֹא תִירָא.

English: ‘And you see horse and chariot, a people more numerous than you’ – even so, you shall not fear.

On the daf / in context: The prohibition holds even when the disparity is obvious.

Type of Learning

Derash on the strength of the command (Bavli) — visible superiority of the enemy does not license fear.

What Is Learned

Even when the enemy’s horses, chariots, and numbers are plainly greater, the Torah still forbids fear because Hashem is with Yisrael.
