According to all that you asked of the Eternal your God at Chorev on the day of the assembly, saying: Let me not continue to hear the voice of the Eternal my God, and this great fire let me not see any more, so that I not die.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: ‘According to all that you asked of the Eternal your God at Chorev’ – this is the request of Yisrael.

On the daf / in context: The prophet is given in response to the people’s own plea at Sinai.

Type of Learning

Derash linking the prophet to the request at Chorev (Sifrei) — the institution of prophecy answers the fear expressed at the assembly.

What Is Learned

The raising of a prophet like Moshe is the fulfillment of what the people themselves asked for at Chorev: a mediated word instead of the direct voice and fire.
