Core Text

English: "A solemn assembly to Hashem" — and elsewhere it says "a solemn assembly shall be for you"; how is this? Rabbi Yehoshua says: Divide it—half for Hashem and half for yourselves.

On the daf / in context: Yom Tov is to be divided between sacred study and prayer on the one hand and physical enjoyment on the other.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Pesachim) — half for Hashem and half for yourselves.

What Is Learned

On a festival one should devote half the day to Hashem (Torah and prayer) and half to personal enjoyment.
