You shall not eat leaven with it; seven days you shall eat with it matzos, the bread of affliction, for in haste you went out of the land of Egypt, in order that you may remember the day of your going out of the land of Egypt all the days of your life.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: "Bread of affliction" — it is written "ani" but we read "oni"; Shmuel said: bread over which many things are recited.

On the daf / in context: The dual reading points to the extensive recitation (Haggadah, Hallel, Birkas HaMazon) that accompanies the matzah.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Pesachim) — matzah is the bread of extensive recitation.

What Is Learned

Matzah is called bread of "oni" because many words of the Haggadah and related texts are recited over it.
