וְלָקַחְתָּ֣ אֶת־הַמַּרְצֵ֗עַ וְנָתַתָּ֤ה בְאׇזְנוֹ֙ וּבַדֶּ֔לֶת וְהָיָה֙ לְךָ֣ עֶ֔בֶד עוֹלָ֑ם וְאַ֥ף לַאֲמָתְךָ֖ תַּעֲשֶׂה־כֵּֽן׃
Then you shall take the awl and put it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your slave forever; and also to your maidservant you shall do likewise.

אֶת הַמַּרְצֵעַ – תַּנְיָא, רַבִּי אוֹמֵר, מַה מַּרְצֵעַ מְיֻחָד שֶׁהוּא שֶׁל מַתֶּכֶת אַף כׇּל דָּבָר שֶׁהוּא שֶׁל מַתֶּכֶת.
English: "The awl" — It was taught: Rabbi says: Just as an awl is distinctive in that it is of metal, so any implement of metal may be used.
On the daf / in context: The instrument of piercing need not be a classic awl; any metal tool suffices.

Derash on the verse (Kiddushin) — any metal implement may serve as the awl.
