You shall surely furnish him liberally from your flock and from your threshing floor and from your winepress; of that with which Hashem your God has blessed you, you shall give to him.
English: "You shall furnish him" — One who sells himself does not receive a grant. What is the reason? The Torah limited the grant to one sold by the court—"you shall furnish him"—him, and not one who sells himself.
On the daf / in context: The parting grant is a special obligation attached to court-imposed slavery, not to voluntary self-sale.
Type of Learning
Derash on the verse (Kiddushin) — a self-sold slave receives no grant.
What Is Learned
A person who sells himself into slavery does not receive the parting grant that is given to one sold by the court.
