Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
מַשֵּׁה יָדוֹ – מַשֵּׁה יָדוֹ וְלֹא הַגְּזֵלָה וְהַפִּקָּדוֹן.

English: "That which he has lent" — that which he has lent, and not theft or a deposit.

On the daf / in context: Only a loan that was given for expenditure is subject to shemittah; objects that remain intact (stolen goods or deposits) are not released.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — theft and deposits are excluded from shemittah.

What Is Learned

Shemittah cancels only loans; it does not cancel the obligation to restore stolen property or a deposit that is still extant.
