Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
מִקִּרְבֶּךָ – וְלֹא מִן הַסְּפָר.

English: “From your midst” — and not from the border.

On the daf / in context: A city on the frontier of Eretz Yisrael is not subject to the full law of ir ha-nidachas, lest the surrounding nations take the opportunity to attack.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sanhedrin) — frontier cities are excluded from the full law of the condemned city.

What Is Learned

A city on the border is not treated as an ir ha-nidachas in the same way as an interior city.
