Men, base fellows, have gone out from your midst and have led astray the inhabitants of their city, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods” that you have not known.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “The inhabitants of their city” — the inhabitants of their own city, and not the inhabitants of another city.

On the daf / in context: If the seducers lead the people of a different city astray, that other city is not judged as an ir ha-nidachas; the individuals are treated as ordinary idolaters.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sanhedrin) — the seduction must be of the seducers’ own city.

What Is Learned

Only the inhabitants of the seducers’ own city can become an ir ha-nidachas through their words.
