Men, base fellows, have gone out from your midst and have led astray the inhabitants of their city, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods” that you have not known.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “They have gone out” — they themselves, and not their agents.

On the daf / in context: If the leading astray was performed through an agent, the city is not judged as an ir ha-nidachas; the individuals are treated as ordinary idolaters.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sanhedrin) — the seducers must act in person, not through an agent.

What Is Learned

The status of ir ha-nidachas requires that the seducers themselves went forth; agency does not create that status.
