But only before Hashem your God shall you eat it, in the place that Hashem your God will choose — you and your son and your daughter and your manservant and your maidservant and the Levite who is within your gates; and you shall rejoice before Hashem your God in all the undertaking of your hand.
English: “But only before Hashem” — And above it is written “you may not eat within your gates.” Wherever we read concerning it “before Hashem your God you shall eat it,” we also read concerning it “you may not eat within your gates”; and wherever we do not read concerning it “before Hashem your God,” we do not read concerning it “you may not eat within your gates.” From here [we learn] that one is liable for ma’aser sheni only after it has seen the face of the wall.
On the daf / in context: Liability for eating ma’aser sheni outside Jerusalem begins only once the produce has entered the city and “seen the wall.”
Type of Learning
Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — the point at which liability for ma’aser sheni outside begins.
What Is Learned
One is liable for eating ma’aser sheni outside Jerusalem only after the produce has entered the city and seen the wall.
