Core Text

English: “To eat within your gates” — It was taught: One who eats ma’aser sheni while it is tamei incurs lashes, as it is written “you may not eat within your gates the tithe of your grain,” and further on it says (15:22) “within your gates you shall eat it, the unclean and the clean.” The Merciful One said: That unclean which is permitted to you there with the clean — here you may not.

On the daf / in context: The contrast between the two verses establishes a specific prohibition against eating ma’aser sheni in a state of impurity.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — the prohibition of eating ma’aser sheni while tamei.

What Is Learned

Eating ma’aser sheni in a state of tumah is a prohibition punishable by lashes.
