Core Text

English: “And you shall rejoice” — “Rejoicing” is stated here and “rejoicing” is stated further on (in Parashas Ki Savo). Just as the rejoicing stated further on refers to peace-offerings, so the rejoicing stated here refers to peace-offerings.

On the daf / in context: The gezeirah shavah establishes that the mitzvah of simchah on the festivals is fulfilled specifically through the eating of shelamim.

Type of Learning

Gezeirah shavah (Sifrei) — equating the two occurrences of “simchah.”

What Is Learned

The rejoicing required here is accomplished through peace-offerings (shelamim).
