And you shall bring there your burnt-offerings and your sacrifices, and your tithes and the contribution of your hand, and your vows and your freewill-offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.
English: “Your tithes” — The verse speaks of two tithes: the animal tithe and the grain tithe. From a place from which you bring up the grain tithe you bring up the flesh of the animal, and from a place from which you do not bring up the grain tithe you do not bring up the animal tithe. From here R’ Akiva said: One may not bring up an animal tithe from outside the Land to be offered.
On the daf / in context: The parallel treatment of the two tithes limits the animal tithe to animals raised in Eretz Yisrael.
Type of Learning
Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — linking the two forms of ma’aser and restricting the animal tithe.
What Is Learned
The animal tithe may be offered only from animals of Eretz Yisrael; it may not be brought from outside the Land.
