English: They told Rabbi Yochanan that there were elders in Babylonia. He was surprised, saying: “In order that your days may be multiplied on the land” — but outside the Land? When they told him that those elders were early and late in the synagogue, he said: That is what benefited them.

The Gemara uses this passuk in a sugya (proof, illustration, or dispute). Named as one of R' Yishmael’s 13 or R' Eliezer’s 32 only when that move is explicit.
Longevity outside the Land is attributed to devotion in the house of prayer, reconciling the verse with diaspora elders.
