The Complete Passuk

For I was in dread of the fierce anger against you that moved GOD to wipe you out. And that time, too, GOD gave heed to me.—

Torah Temimah points to Nedarim 32a.

TT lemma: מפני האף והחמה (unit 2 of 2).

Sefaria — Nedarim 32a

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “Because of the anger and the wrath.” But it is written, “I have no wrath.” One answer: there are two kinds of wrath. Another answer: it is the army of wrath, rather than the wrath itself.

On the daf / in context: Nedarim 32a; Avodah Zarah 4a.

Type of Learning

Custom (reconciling “I have no wrath” with Moshe’s fear)

What Is Learned

Divine “wrath” toward Israel is framed carefully; the calf is the case where Moshe speaks of full anger and wrath.
